Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, a Japanese violinist and pedagogue, started his mother tongue method in Japan in the 1940's. After living and studying the violin in Germany, Suzuki realized that all children learned their native language by listening to and imitating their parents. After having this insight, he deduced that musical language, and learning to play an instrument, could be taught in the same manner. Talent Education, the name given to this method, is based on the principle that talent is not inborn and that all children can develop great musical ability. New skills are taught in very small steps. By repeating these small practice points the child is able to easily master new skills, thus building confidence and self-esteem.

The basic tenets which make the Suzuki method so successful are:

o Begin musical study as early as age 3.
o Practice with parent as home teacher.
o Progress in small manageable steps.
o Participate in both individual and group lessons.
o Learn music easily through a well developed ear.
o Build self-esteem and empathy for others by learning in a supportive, fun environment.
